We identify, search, capture, and relocate Rattlesnakes and other snake species as necessary.

We also strive to provide education and knowledge about all wildlife to help see the big picture of living alongside nature and its ecosystems. Through a better understanding of nature, together we can make recommendations on how to plan for snake season, and what you may or may not be able to do in terms of preventing or deterring snakes from being drawn to a location.

Utah State Law Prohibits the harm or killing of native snakes, unless in immediate unavoidable danger.

Which is almost never the case.

Per wildlife laws, all native animals are released into suitable habitat following state biologist guidelines.

In Utah if you have snake that is NOT a Rattlesnake, we generally recommend leaving them be when possible…

Snakes are not aggressive they are defensive, however they will almost always hide or flea before resorting to defending.

All snakes are a positive contribution to a balanced ecosystem, readily preying upon many animals that most humans consider pests. Refrain from the use of poison on pests, as you will introduce poison to their natural predators, nearby wildlife, domestic pets, and overall threaten the balance of local ecosystem.

In Utah, only the Rattlesnake species possess a potent venom that is dangerous to humans.

Besides the Rattlesnakes, other Utah species are mostly harmless, even those that are mildly venomous.

Not all snake species populate the same habitat ranges, and presence varies with location.

Our current website footer includes imagery of our 2 most common local snake concerns in our primary service area along the Wasatch Mountains.

The Great Basin Gophersnake, and the Great Basin Rattlesnake.

Often times we are contacted to help with this identification.

Typically AI cannot 100% identify these snakes, and it is not worth the risk to expose yourself to a potential rattlesnake bite. Please Contact Us the experts to confirm this identification if you are unsure.

It is important to remember that Rattlesnakes will not always rattle.

Some may choose not to rattle for various reasons, and others may be unable to rattle.

Snakes can lose their tail and rattle due to injury, and newborn snakes are unable to rattle until they shed their skin at least 1 time, and grow another rattle segment allowing it to shake against itself and produce the sound.

These species are commonly confused because of not only their patterns and colors which can vary in especially the Rattlesnakes, but also the defensive actions they take when feeling threatened.

Both will fold their body into a classic snake posture ready to strike, hiss and puff up their body too look larger, and shake their tail.

The Gophersnake can produce an audible tail vibration sound from this shaking depending on the surface they are on when they do it. Such as dry grass or leaves, as opposed to being mostly silent when on the dirt or rock.

Because of their similarities, some not so obvious identifications must be dictated by body traits, with as many traits confirmed as possible to ensure positivity.

  • Head shape slender and relatively similar size compared to the start of the neck.
  • Head is narrow and tapered to rear of jaw, but can appear wider when the snake is threatened and flattens its head to appear larger.
  • Generally a consistently slender longer looking snake from head to tail. Can vary with food in stomach*
  • Long slender tail with a pointed tip if whole. All snakes can lose their tails, a Gophersnake could have a blunted tail due to injury.

  • 1 Set of nostrils front/top of face. Lack of heat sensing pits/holes.

  • Round Pupils

  • Head shape is wide and relatively large compared to the start of the neck.
  • Head grows wider near the rear of the jaw and can appear similar to the shape of a triangle or diamond with smooth corners.
  • Generally stout, heavier appearing body type that varies from big head, skinny neck, thicker body, short tail.
  • Short stubby tail. Even if the snake does not have much of – or any rattle on it’s tail, you can still observe a short tail base as compared to a long slender tail of other non dangerous species in Utah
  • Large heat sensing pits/holes on side of top lip. Also has nostrils forward/top of face. Heat pits used for sensing heat proximity especially in the dark.
  • Vertical/Elliptical pupils like a cat. Will appear as slits during bright conditions. Dim conditions will dilate pupils appearing larger.
